Federal Ruling
The Washington Supreme Court hasĀ voted against and removed legislation that prevented political opponents from from lying about their rivals.
The law was removed even though it only was against lies based on malice.
The majority of the panel said that the law allowed claims even when there was no true harm, they said that it was in violation of the First Amendment.
They also said different courts have held true to laws that were very similar, but say these rulings should neither be taken as faith nor condemned. The fact the the government would be the final say in a situation thats based on what people have spoken, and not the people themselves comes into conflict with the First Amendment.
